The "self-inflating" pads you see at camping supply places is still nothing
more than a foam pad. It's an open-cell foam stuffed in a vinyl "bag" with
valves. To deflate it, you roll it up as tight as you can and close the
valve. This will give it a smaller packing size than a closed-cell foam
pad. It inflates by unrolling the pad and opening the valve, then closing
it again when the foam expands to its normal shape.
I think the original poster was looking for something more comfortable than
a basic foam pad, but the comfort in the self-inflating pads is about the
same. I think you can find some up to an inch thick, which may help
somewhat.
Of course, there may be some type of compressed-gas system out there to get
that 3 or 4 inch size, but I'm not aware of those.
