I go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy 1/2" poly propylene rope. It comes
stock in 3 to 4 colors. Poly pro is not easy to fuse, but once you do it
makes a nice thin end that is very easy to weave. It melts unevenly and
tends to expand. Once i heat it, I mash it together with an insulating
cloth and shape it. It will not trim off easily like natural fiber, but
this limit is more than overcome by the visual ease teaching with it. I
take lengths of rope and unwind them and retwist with three different
colors. Poly pro has very good memory and twists back together very easily.
This makes a great demonstration aid for splicing. I make enough for the
boys I'm teaching and give them a guide I got at Woodbadge. It isn't
unusual for them to not complete all three splices in sitting, but to get it
at home if they have the guide and the colored rope for ease.
Do not use woven poly pro, uwe the thre strand twist.
