(Irene, if you can please forward this over to Scouts-L, I would appreciate
it greatly!
Thanks!)

Irene Kempf gives us the warning:

>Warning, New Leader Question! :)

*hehehehehee* and then asked:

>Does a scout have to be a certain rank in order to be a den chief,
officially?

No. The best Den Chiefs, however, are those whom have been Cub Scouts before
and understand the Cub Scouting program; and those whom have been in the
Troop long enough to tell interested (curious) Cub Scouts about the fun he's
having as a Boy Scout.

>I understand you do not want them to be close in age to the cubs they are
>serving.

Not necessarily true, Irene. A former WEBELOS Cub Scout and now First Class
Scout may only be one year older than the boys in his Den that he's serving
as Den Chief of.

>Do they wear the den chief patch and the cord or one at a time?

The patch is presented by the Troop. The Den Chief Cord is traditionally
presented by the Pack. The Den Chief should wear both together unless the
Den Chief is also holding another Troop leadership position (which too, is
not uncommon; I was a Scribe and Den Chief for two separate Dens in two
separate Packs (I had no love life then *smiling*) for a year or so.

>Can they start serving the den prior to den chief training? Training would
>be in November.

Yes, they can start working with the Den right after appointment and
confirmation by the Pack's leadership. But you're right....they should
attend the training (and it's required for the Den Chief Service cord!!) as
soon as they can.

>Is there anywhere on the net that explains this program in detail?

Check out Don DeYoung's Cub Scouting Uniform site. If you go to my
Unofficial Uniform and Insignia site
(http://www.mninter.net/~blkeagle/insignia.htm) and look down the left
column, you'll see a link to Don's great Cub Scouting site. Not only is
there more information than what I've provided here, but there's full color
scans of the various shoulder cords!!

Hope this helps, "new leader!!!" *heheeheheheehee*

Settummanque!
