With today's canoes this could be a very dangerous activity. Most older
canoes, the wood and canvas variety, frequently had only a couple of thwarts
(that's the piece of wood that goes across the width of the canoe and holds
the sides at a set distance) so the middle of the canoe was quite open.
Modern canoes will have not only the thwarts, but two or three
permanently-mounted seats; there's just no room for safe activity other than
paddling. And, as an avid paddler myself, I'd suggest you leave the
horseplay for shore-based activities if you must have them.
