Oh boy, this is MY pet peeve! How uncool is Scouting? My son goes through
this very thing and I have to do my best to keep him involved in spite of
it. He also is a "closeted" Scout, and I can sense the embarrassment
whenever a new friend finds out he's a Scout. Here are the points I make
whenever I hear: "You're in Boy Scouts?" --

1. Don't knock it until you try it.
2. Not every kid can hack being a Scout
3. Come to a meeting and you'll see that not every Scout is a "goody
two-shoes" (especially in our troop <G>).
4. Scouts are required to build fires, use knives, shoot guns (ok, only
occasionally, but shhhh!), sleep in a tent for a weekend a month (away from
parents), be out in the cold and rain, buy and prepare food that they want
to eat, hike miles at a time, backpack gear. It ain't easy!
5. The uniform is no more strange than any sports uniform -- and would you
make fun of a policeman or military personnel walking around in uniform? (I
think not!)

If anyone else has suggestions, I'm all ears.
