Checking with the neighbors will certainly work in small places. I
thought Bowling Green was a little big for it to work there, and I know
for a fact that it is worse than pointless in my neighborhood here in
metro DC. Of the 21 houses nearest me, I know the name of the occupant
in 3 of them (four if you count my own). I recognize AN occupant of 5
more; I know that further up the street is a very nice Russian lady, and
up the court is a Pakistani family who are heavily into cricket and soccer.
That's less than half my "neighbors" I know anything at all about.
(Contrast: the small town where I grew up: I can name every one of the
closest 21 neighbors and a fair number of "next street over" from any of
them. Our son can walk down the main street in that town today and
be recognized.)
