To all;
This really hits it, doesn't it. Neil is right that this is 'only' about
ONE of the methods of Scouting. 'Deal with it'. Every Scout that I have
talked to about the new book along with the new requirements has been only a
little upset about the changes. Each and every one of them has been more
concerned about not making any mistakes where a requirement changed number,
i.e. Tenderfoot #3a and #3b is now #4a and #4b. They do not want any mixup
with what they have already done versus what they still need to do. They
have all been (if we have done our job of informing the boys) informed of
the changes and when they will go into effect and they accept these changes
with a great amount of maturity. All of which makes this OGM (old
grey-haired man) smile because this type of attitude and behaviour is what
Scouting tries to instill.
We all sometimes have much to learn, and this (for me) is an ongoing,
everyday process. I am affected by the methods of Scouting as much, or more,
than the boys' themselves sometime seem to be. Let's do it.
#1-The Ideals. Really does mean to live the Oath, Law, motto, and slogan.
#2-The Patrol Method. Instills pride, a sense of family, and a feeling of
identity.
#3-The Outdoors. Why they join in the first place. It is where all the
adventure is.
#4-Advancement. Recognition for achievement of work completed.
#5-Association with Adults. Learning how to interact with adults and how to
be an adult.
#6-Personal Growth. To explore themselves and come to an understanding of
their place in the world.
#7-Leadership Development. Learning confidence and the abilities to work
with others.
#8-The Uniform. Bringing a sense of belonging to all no matter what age and
level.
All of these really do have to be in place for the program to work to the
advantage for the boy in Scouting. Do 7 of these and miss one and the boy
cannot get the best benefit from the program, and we owe it to our youth to
do the best to prepare them for their own future.
