Bob Riley writes on background checks for leaders.
Stated in the material was "If a prospective leader sounds too good
to be true, he probably is". Also mentioned was the importance of
checking references.
I do not remember where this suggestion came up, but I do remember
that it had something to do with the YPT class I took a few weeks
ago. Now, the suggestion that I heard was that after you have
finished with a check, you ask that reference for another reference.
That does 2 things for you. One, it gives you access to an
additional person that may know something about your prospective
leader that the one that you spoke with doesn't. Two, it gives you
a double check on the possibility of a backstabbing "friend" doing
a hatchet job on your prospect. (I've been there, in the job
sector.)
Sure, you check the 3-4 refs that you prospect gives you, and then
you do have to also check with 3-4 more, but it just adds a level
of safety. Also, I would suggest making _written_records_ of who
was called, and the results pro or con.
