Re: Blue Cards Don't Do Doodly

I suppose Blue Cards may be useful in verifying information on an Eagle
Application in certain circumstances, but I've never seen a single Blue
Card used to do this during my tenure as a troop leader. >>
On the other hand, my wife and I have always advocated having the boy keep his
blue cards in a business card folder, just for the purpose of verifying
council computer records. Those records are not infallible. Mistakes are
made. The blue cards provide a back up. I would, personally, have an even
greater problem relying on troop records, because, in my experience those
records can be slipshod at best. The advancement reports are not always kept,
or if kept are not consistently kept. Secondary records are often based on
what the advancement person thinks is the right day to put things down-
sometimes a merit badge is recorded as earned when received at a court of
honor, etc.
Councils can be very sticky on timing when it comes to an Eagle. It is very
important to be able to prove the proper succession of merit badges earned
before the appropriate ranks and the requisite number of months of time "in-
rank." The blue cards (and sometimes the card recieved at a court of honor)
can provide that back up, that proof. Keep them all. Discard nothing until
your Eagle turns 18.
Yours in Scouting,
G. John Marmet
