Looking at the camping/dishwashing question,
JH Moss wrote:
"Health services suggest you switch your line. The cool Clorox rinse should
be last. The dishes need to stay in the Clorox rinse for at least 1 minute
before removing. You only need 1 capful of Clorox for 1 gal of water so
there is no residue effect using the Clorox last."
And Ian said:
"The idea of having the hot rinse last is that it washes off the bleach and
the hot water evaporates quicker, making air drying easier. It is a good
idea to have rubber gloves available because some people are sensitive to
detergent or bleach, and can get contact dermatitis."
Mr. Moss is correct, using the rinse at the end (as the new Handbook
stipulates) does indeed wash the bleach off, hence ending its sanitizing. The
proper sequence is (soap) wash, clear rinse, and clorine sanitizing. The
amount of chlorine bleach (see Moss) is not sufficient to harm the environs or
the usual person's hands. There is far more jeopardy (personal, at least)
from "boiling" water which must be at 212 degrees, with dishes submerged for
minutes, to be effective.
I also agree that central washing is far preferable to multiple sites, each
producing waste and each needing supervision.
