Most units use some form of the 3-pot method like yours. It is a good idea to
scrape out the dishes before you wash them to keep your dishwater as clean as
possible. You can also cut down on the dishwashing problem by reviewing menus
before you go out to ensure that you bring only the right amount of food (the
rest becomes garbage which must be carried out). A couple of points. As BSA
adopts the Leave No Trace ethics, you may want to eliminate the bleach. If
you are car camping and the bleach water goes into the sanitary sewer, that is
one thing. If it goes out on the ground, that is an entirely different
matter. We are trying to minimize our impact on the environment. Instead of
putting your dishes on a tarp to air dry, why not put them in a large mesh bag
(like what is used to carry soccer balls). It keeps them up off the ground
where they can get dirty just from the normal people traffic in the area.
Finally, dishwashing should be a patrol activity. Yes, for inexperienced
patrols, I would have an adult monitor what was going on. This teaches the
patrol to operate as a unit. Try to reduce the amount of soap that you use to
the absolute minimum in keeping with the LNT ethics. Soap also impacts the
environment. When you dispose of your dish water, do you run it through a
screen to pick up any food particles or does the water go directly on the
ground. Check out the National Outdoor Leadership School's Wilderness Guide
(to be published later this year) and visit Leave No Trace webisite at
www.lnt.org to get some great teaching material that will help you implement
LNT into your dishwashing and your troop's hiking and camping techniques.
