Thanks to the poster of the detailed discussion of the marlinespike
in the context of working with rope.
The other use in the good old days was in a rack along the side of
the ship, where the spike extending through the rack made a cleat of
sorts that was used for the securing of sheets (ropes) for the
control of the square-rigged sails.
