Those numbers are of two kinds, Harold.

The BSA Supply Division will stock manuals, pamphlets and other
materials (posters, cards, etc.) based on a stocking number. It's
a four or five digit number that appears on the inside cover of the
publication, on a corner of a poster or flyer or application, or on
the reverse side of a card or other item. A simple phone call to
the BSA's Supply Division can get you those items.

Various program and support divisions at the BSA's National Office
also stock program and support material, specific to the program or
support item. For instance, the Venturing Division stocks flyers
and information on the various awards, training courses and other
items. These items, called "bin items" are more or less
"restricted" to those whom take the time to either write the
National division requesting them or to local Councils requesting
the items in bulk form for later distribution as they see fit to
you and me in the field. Those numbers are also found on the
material somewhere but it's a two-digit number coinciding with the
division or support office followed by a two or three digit and
sometimes a letter. Again, those items are available ONLY through
direct contact with National or through your Council, whom must
request them from the appropriate National office.

>Where can someone get this list? Is it available on the internet?

There USED to be a publication called "Scouting's Library of
Literature" which used to be available as a bin item from the
Supply Division. The last word I heard was that because of the
cost of publication and because many of the items were indeed "slow
movers" and many volunteers weren't interested in them, that the
BSA was considering posting the Library of Literature on its
website in condensed form. I don't know what's the latest on
that...I've been busy with some other "hot" projects around the
homestead here....I will see if I can find a copy of an older
version of that publication and see if I can scan and post it
somewhere.

This question comes up a lot, and it's one of those things I
committed myself to working on over the summer. It looks like I
may have that chance to do that and post it sooner than that, if
everything works out the way it's supposed to. In the meantime,
I'll see if I can find a copy...if anyone else out there have a
more recent copy (like sometime after 1996!), please let me know
and I'll share it with everyone through either a PDF or a HTML'ed
page!
