Some of them never do. Others take 2+ years to advance from First Class to
Star. I assume that's because it takes two years to earn 6 badges via Summer
Camp alone (they do only one week of summer camp, and going after more than 3
badges there leaves no time for anything else).
The exceptions to this rule are those boys who are getting pushed from behind
(by their parents), like my son and the sons of the SM and of the CC. And I
should probably qualify that statement. I am not constantly on my son's tail
about MBs, nor do I do his work for him. But we have had several talks about
them, in which I explained how valuable I feel the program is, and why it makes
sense to get a certain card NOW rather than LATER, and so forth. If he decides
not to go for it, that's his choice and fine with me. He has also been
following this thread with me, and would like to implement some of the ideas at
his next PLC (he's a PL).
