Re: Child Protection - Foster Kids

Hi Scouts and Scouters!

George gdtester <gdtester@EROLS.COM> touched on a MOST sensitive subject
here, Subject: Child Protection - Foster Kids

Begin Quote:
">Our main issue is who can give us permission to take these Scouts on
trips, local and out of state?"
End Quote!

George, I have not had anything to do with Youth Protection for over 3
years, but in it's formative days, YP did some assuming that made some
folks nervous...including me.

As a unit leader, I was suddenly confronted by the fact that we had boys
in the cub program, that were from 'broken homes'. Nothing New!
But, we had some Dads with NO RIGHTS to see thier kids, "stealing them"
as they walked out of a den meeting.

Suddenly we had Female Den Leaders being arrested for collusion(??)
(Give me a Break!) because an over-wrought Mom suspected her boy's
DL(Den Leader) of playing 'footsie' with her ex. Draw your own
conclusions!

The point here finally is,

ALWAYS Make Sure You KNOW Who Your Boy's
Birth, AND Custody Parents Are..They Are
NOT Always Going to Be The Same!

Ask for Birth Certificates that names the parents.
If the parents are divorced, Ask for the custody papers
If the parents are seperated, ask for the visitation papers
Accept permission slips from A Legal Guardian ONLY!

And George, we found out that parents with nothing to hide, don't mind
providing "proof of ownership" on thier handsome boy. Most single moms
appreciated the fact, that we cared enough to want to be sure.

I didn't catch your unit position, but I will let you in on a little
secret. You DON'T EVER want your phone to ring at Too Late PM, and have
it be a screaming Mom on the other end, hyterical beyond words, because
her boy never made it home from a den meeting!

This is Classic 'C.Y.B.' Folks! (Cover Your Butt!)
