[DPRV] Klondike: Veni, Vidi, Vici

I'm proud to report that Troop 69 had a pretty good time this Saturday at
the Des Plaines Valley Council's Klondike Derby. In the morning, our Scouts
scored a 91 out of a possible 100 points at the 4 morning activity stations
to take 2nd place. Fortunately, the 1st place Troop chose the portable fire
grate as their prize, so our Scouts got the prize they were hoping for, the
10 pair of Thorlo wool/acrylic hiking socks. For those of you who haven't
been following Chicago's weather these days, all you need to know is that
half the boys promptly put them on!
In the afternoon, there was the usual sled race around the 1-mile loop at
Camp Tomo, with the addition of 4 stations where the Scouts had to stop and
demonstrate knowledge of a particular skill (this counted against the
elapsed time, with penalty points added based on the skill execution,
leadership and teamwork shown): First Aid, Clove Hitch around the Tree,
Compass Use, and Fire Building. The Scouts finished with a total time of
32:47 (29:17 elasped time + 3:30 penalties) to take home the first place
Klondike flag. The major reason was that the boys took 3rd place last year
and had set a goal to win this year. They worked to that goal by spending
each of the 4 Troop meetings before the Klondike reviewing the 4 race skill
station skills, a lightweight sled design, and having 8 Scouts race their
hearts out the entire race.
Some of the boys went home, and a few stayed to get a taste of sub-freezing
camping. We got home in good spirits, with a couple of additions for the
Troop flagstaff. Hope you had a good weekend too.
