Bob,
When I was the program director of a Scout reservation back in the early
1970s we had a commando hike that was a two day trek. The thing that the
boys really liked was that it was all at night and sleeping was during the
day. This required us to teach some different skills about how to find a
good place to sleep in the heat and how to navigate in low light. In the
course of the trek we had various obstacles that required a lot of team work
like building a rope bridge across a stream and getting everyone over the
water without mishap. (We picked a calm spot where a fall would not cause
major injury, only red faces). Some of the trail was by compass bearings.
Sometimes we had two groups and would have them pretend to be an ambush
group and a hunter group. In this case they had to try to figure out where
the other group was while trying to keep quiet and not leave a trail behind.
The group that got caught or surprised by the other had to cook the next
meal for the victors. They went nuts over this and really enjoyed the
challenge big time. During the course of these hikes we also focused a lot
of attention on wildlife stalking and observation at night - they were
absolutely amazed at nocturnal animals and their activities.
