Toni,
You have a real problem, but not with the Cub Scouts. They are bound to be
full of energy and anxious to do something. From the sounds of things the
past experience has been that everyone tries to eat and everyone lets the
boys run wild. Try varying your program so that there are activities that
burn a lot of energy before everyone eats so that they can get rid of some
of this wildness. Do action songs, run relays, or whatever your folks like
to do this.
I would also recommend that committee members have a word with parents to
make sure everyone understands that families are responsible for the conduct
of their children. It should only take a few words from a parent to tell
Johnny that he will remain seated and that he is not allowed to run wild.
He may get fidgety, but there is no reason to allow the boys to run riot.
The other thing is to think real hard about what food you have. This is for
the boys after all. If people are sitting there trying to have a
multi-course meal or a big potluck, that takes a lot of time and most of the
food is stuff that the boys probably don't want to eat. Try making it a
pizza night or spagetti night where the food can be served up quick, eaten
quickly and you can get on with your program.
