Working on staff at a summer camp or scout camp has to be a
labor of love, and not an attempt to finance a new car or a year at
college. I did it the summer after college and before I went into the
service - I had no pressing bills, I needed some time in the sun under
freindly conditions, and I was asked by the camp director, a second father
to many scouts in the Daniel Webster council at the time. I got "three
hots and a cot", a small salary, some useful exercise, and the chance to
make a difference in the lives of about 200 scouts. I also learned
scouting skills, including signalling and Morse Code really well. In
balance, I came out way ahead of the game.
