with other than scout units to count towards the 20 nights."

ABSOLUTELY! The requirement (9a) says, "Camp out a total of at least 20
days and nights. Sleep each night under the stars or under a tent you
have pitched. (You may use a week of summer camp as part of the 20 days
and 20 nights.)"

Any qualifiers or restrictions that aren't expressly stated in the merit
badge requirements would amount to adding requirements, which as we all
know, is not allowed.

Camping with your family counts, camping while you were a Cub Scout
counts, camping with a church group or other youth group counts,
campiong with some of your buddies counts, camping by yourself counts,
even camping in your backyard would seem to meet the requirement, so
probably counts, too.

Good luck,
