Re: Memorable Field Trips

Donald R Izard (dizard@ACSU.BUFFALO.EDU)

While we were living near Baltimore Maryland, it was a DAY trip
over to Gettysburgh national battlefield park. We were there
and following a mixed tour - partly driving - partly hiking.

We got to a remote part of the park - maybe Cemetary ridge,
and were walking in small groups - and very quietly reading
all the monuments. I in fact was pretty amazed at how quiet
the boys were . . . Just then a gently breeze began to blow
. . one of those chilly summer breeses - and then we began
to hear a "fife and drum" playing "on the winds" !!!!

Whoa - boy!!! We looked at each other, and most decided it was
time to head back to the cars !!! It was only much later
that we arrived at the "look out tower" and could climb up
to see a very distant group of re-enactors or some other
cememonial group - with a fife and drum - in a vary distant
area from where we had been hiking!

My son still talks about the field trip - 12 years later!
And has become a real historian on both the Civil war and 1812.

Oh - I failed to mention - that at the time, I was telling the
boys about my relatives - two brothers - who were at Vicksburg
during the civil war - only one came home!
