camp summer staff

I have a question for those on this list.
Last summer my son worked as a lifeguard at a church camp all summer.
He is looking around at summer jobs this coming summer. While he
enjoyed the work he did last year, the pay was low and hours long. He
has talked about working at the town swimming pool or even McD's this
summer instead of camp (higher wages, shorter hours, time with high
school friends). I have spoken to him about the personal growth
experienced by working at a camp, etc. However it can be a difficult
sell when he sees the car his friend paid for or the money others earn
for college from a "real summer job".
How do others deal with this issue? Do we loose many
summer camp staff to these "hourly pay" jobs?
