I had previously suggested the USGS tutotial at

http://info.er.usgs.gov/fact-sheets/finding-your-way/finding-your-way.html

I sent a cooment about that site through there feedback link and got
a very helpful response from Bruce Wallace, USGS, with the following
suggestions for sources of map symbols online:

http://www.omnimap.com/catalog/usgs/symbols.htm

http://www.indiana.edu/~libgm/topographic.html

http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/EART/digital/legend.html

http://www.gis.psu.edu/geog121/photopo/topo_areas.html

These are some good resources, thanks to Bruce and all the other
helpful fols at USGS.
