I have been reading the new SMHB. It offers short sections on how it
should be .... and seems to do this very well, but there is nothing on how
to get there as there was in the older versions. I would advise all new
SMs to buy it and read it immediately, get a copy of Wood's Wisdom to be
your real guide to the program, and go to training to find out how to make
it work. The format is such that every SM ought to have his copies of the
SMHB and WW in the same folder - they have the same physical format.
I do miss somethings. I miss the generic outline for JLT. I almost missed
the Scout Oath - it is the smallest box on the page and is dwarfed by the
Law and Wilderness Code. I miss the generic ceremnoies in the older SMHB's
which covered more options than even Wood's Wisdom does now. I did note
the constant referral to other BSA publications.
There does seem to be a common thread in the new handbooks. The OA
handbook, the SMHB and the BSHB all seem to be shorter, more illustrated
and at a more introductory level - good fast start sources, but not good
long term references. Is there a second tier of HBs being prepared - BSA
"the reference series"?
I would be interested in others opinions.
BTW, I bought my copy from the new BSA catalog directly along with the new
Eagle and Venturing T Shirts. The Eagle T may be stating a new BSA stance
- "I don't just fly, I rule the sky". I notice a little more aggressive
attitude in a number of small things.
