This information didn't make it to the web pages. There are several known
issues with both the Win95 Plus! version of Themes.exe and the Win98
version. If you are running Windows 95 with Plus! and you've installed
either MS Office 97 or MS FrontPage 97, you will likely get an "illegal
operation" error if you try to view a theme with a JPEG wallpaper image. The
problem is with the JPEG image filters installed with Office97 and
FrontPage97. You'll find the fixed themes.exe file on either the Office or
FrontPage CD in the "patch" folder (FrontPage), or the "valuepack/patch"
folder (Office).
If you are running Win98 w/o Plus!98 you are likely to encounter an "invalid
page fault". This time, however, the problem is a little deeper in the
system (i.e. it has to do with a rather deeply buried registry key). There
are two ways to fix the problem. One way is to install Plus!98 which has the
latest version of themes.exe. The other way is to edit the system registry
which I do not recommend unless you are very familiar with what the system
registry is all about. The procedure can be found in the Microsoft TechNet
(article ID Q190140). If you can't get to the article, email me at
ajmako@nls.net and I will send you the procedure.
You can check the version of themes.exe you have by finding it in Explorer,
right clicking on it, and selecting "properties". The version number can be
found on the panel called "version."
The latest version is
4.80.1998 (MS Plus!98)
4.40.500 (Win98 version)
4.40.311 (version found on Office and FrontPage CD)
4.40.310 (original Plus!95 version)
