Ian - I must some what disagree. I think that an important part of the
Patroll method is "team building" and learning how to use the full
resources of your NEW team. Just as in Wood Badge - the patrolls
are not controlled by the participants - but the leaders.
What happens within the patroll, and how the leaders develope
leadership skills and form a functional team, with motivation and
spirit etc. - this I think is a major learning point of the
patroll methods.
If a patroll is organized by the scouts, and they each just
"BUDDY up" all the time, they will miss a great opportunity to learn
how to build teams - some teams with weak links - and some teams
where the leader is NOT the most dominant force etc.
This to me - is all an important part of the learning for
both the patroll leaders, and the members. ie If we work
together - we can do anything! Etc. If we fight and complain
we will accomplish very little. Just look at the US congress
right now . . ;)

The youth should be allowed to lead, but somettimes they need
to know where there are going. . . .
