Backpacking vs Car Camping

When my son and I first joined 323, the program was about 50/50
between the 2. There were some car camping trips, and there
were some backpacking trips. Some of the BP trips were _rough_.
Gradually, with the changes in SMs and boys, we became almost
completely a carcamp Troop. Now, the Outdoor Chm (who refuses to
get trained), an old Boy Scout, feels that there should be nothing
but BP trips. And we get into arguments at almost every Troop
Committee meeting over his methods, ideas, and how the Troop
should be run.
IMHO, there is a place for both. You need the CC trips, to hone
the camping skills of the younger boys. And some of the older
boys. You need the BP trips to challenge them. It's a bit like
moving, in a way. Some moves can be doen in a couple of pickup
loads. Others need a full semi.
Neither is the complete answer. Being autocratic about it is not
a help, either.
