Either the SM does not understand what his job is, and needs to be
educated, or he knows how the program is suposed to run and chooses
to do things his own way. In either case it is up to the Troop Committee
to take control, maybe with support from the training team and
Commissioner staff.
<snip>
I'd be interested in the SM view point.
I've been on the other side of this before. The PLC makes a decision and
the SM backs them up. The Parents and the Committee (untrained...."you
mean there's aims to Scouting?") don't like the decision and blame the SM
for a lousy program. (You have to let them fail and evaluate).
I've had to deal with parents that complain, and I listen and then I explain,
then they go to the CC (untrained...."you mean there's aims to
Scouting?") and say I don't listen because I didn't let them have their
way. I've had parents that want to be part of the program, and try to
control the program (as opposed to let it be boy lead)(untrained...."you
mean there's aims to Scouting?") .

If the troop would do something instead of the standard go set up tents
and sit around and do what the SM's son wants to do (he is SPL), they
might get the older boys to go camping.
<snip>
It sounds like the SM is protecting the interests of the elected boy
leaders. If the boys don't like the program, they can change it. But, maybe
this is what the majority selected to do.

This sounds like a good topic for the PLC to discuss to me. Program is
their area and if the campouts aren't offering variety, that's their
baleywick.
<snip>
Bingo. What does the PLC say? This was never addressed. This is yet
another point of view.

He singled out my son (who has had trouble making campouts due to
fulfilling his "Duty to God" and who had surgery last year and couldn't go
to campouts for a time).
<snip>
What I've seen before (therefor IMHO) is the boy in despair could be
viewed as apathetic and not a team player because of his lack of
participation, and the other boys are tired of it.
<snip>
(I told the ASM that if Justin was moved out of his old patrol and away
from his best friend, we were moving to a new troop).
<snip>
This may not correct any problem that is manifesting in the Troop, but,
somewhere there is a Scout Troop for everybody. Find it. Have fun.
Enjoy life and the Scouting experience.
