Geez David,
Like I told our SE a few days ago, I thought Scouts was suppose to be fun.
As a Cub Committee Chairman and a Scoutmaster (and married to a Webelos 2 Den
Leader) I can offer an opinion.
I don't think that the boy can join Boy Scouts at this time due to his age.
As a Scoutmaster, I expect more from the boys than my wife does as a Cub
Leader. I have seen 10 year olds ready for the challenge and conversely I
have seen 14 year olds that are very immature.
Does your Webelos den go camping and to other activities with your Boy Scout
Troop? Ours does. This allows the interaction between the age groups and
eases them into the Troop. If you do this, the boy can still go camping with
his friends and still comply with the requirements. I personally feel that
the six months or so spent in Webelos 2 is not wasted but allows the boy to
mature a little more and get something out of the requirements of the activity
badges.
This is probably all moot because I don't think that the registrar at your
council office will allow his entry into Boy Scouts because of the age.
