Pinewood Derby Question

Hi all,
I don't usually ask questions about the cub program, having left it
several years ago, but at roundtable the other night I stopped in to the
cub RT to see a friend of mine, and a discussion came up about car kits
used in the pinewood derby.
Seems a pinewood derby chairman frfom a local pack found some references
on a couple of pinewood derby websites to TWO official BSA-sanctioned
styles of cars, and there is apparently a hot and furious discussion
among pinewood derby cognoscente about whether one or the other style
give a competitive advantage.
None of us at RT knew anything about it, but as a member of the district
committee (my other hat) I said I'd raise the question with the virtual
campfire that never ends--you guys!
So--what's the skinny on this issue? Is it simply a case of a couple of
people with too much time on their hands, or is there a real issue here?
I'm inclined toward the former view, but have been known to be wrong.
YiS,
Peter Farnham (and a good old Beaver, Too)
