Remember that it's NOT JUST the Insignia Guide that gives guidance
for wear of the BSA's uniforming; the Order of the Arrow's Guide
for Advisors (GOA), the BSA's Scout and Scoutmasters' Handbooks;
the coming Venturing Leader Handbook; and the BSA's Adminstration
Guide (for professionals) all have a little "take" on the
uniforming of volunteers and professionals and youth members.

While the Insignia (Control) Guide should be the "breaker of all
ties" between the various manuals and handbooks, there are some
guidance that supersedes the current Insignia Guide which was put
out by the BSA's Council Support Division or the Operations Group
through memos directly to local Councils (which are *supposed to be
shared* with you and me out here "in the field").

For instance:

>a. I can continue to wear any uniform that was issued for my
>current registration, no matter how obsolete, as long as it is in
>good shape, is worn in conformance to current standards, and is
>worn consistently (that is no rags; no currently improper stuff

>Scout shirt with green Scout pants, and not with the
>olive ones). It will take an entire squadron of Uniform Police
>(or do they come in flocks?) to pry my official "field cap" out of
>my cold dead hands.

And I don't want to be around on that day!

Series' of memos sent to Council Scout Executives (the last round
was sent out two, no three years ago now) states that any official
uniform IF WORN COMPLETE AND SERVICEABLE may be worn by our youth
and/or adult members. This was to resolve any conflicts between
professionals "insisting" that the ONLY official uniform is the one
being marketed and sold presently and those Scouters and Scouts
that live in areas or cannot afford the present uniforms but have
access to the older (cheaper) versions and choose to wear them.

So as long as you're using the "most current insignia", John, and
as long as you're wearing them in the places prescribed by the
present Insignia Guide, it doesn't matter if the uniform is the old
khaki, the wool shirt and pants (my personal favorite!), the
"sanforized" versions of the cotton khaki, or the first or current
version of the khakitan shirts and green pants. As long as it is
COMPLETE AND SERVICEABLE.

And the policies does NOT apply to hats nor socks; you may wear any
official hat and/or official socks as you can find.

>b. I can continue to wear any badge of office, no matter how
>obsolete as long as it was issued to me, and as long as it is the
>badge of the office I now hold. and

You've got me stumped there, John. I can't find anything except
for the one line in the current Insignia Guide which states that
insignia worn should represent "current status in the movement".
So as long I guess, as *you know* what that emblem is supposed to
represent, and as long as it *is* the emblem it represents, you
could wear it.

>c. I can continue to wear any lodge flap as long as the lodge
>is still around and I am a dues paying member.

Ummmm I don't know about that one. If you're wearing for instance
an activity flap or an older issue flap from that same Lodge, I
don't see anything wrong with it. If you're wearing a Lodge flap
from a lodge that predates the current Lodge (by merger or
consoldation), there may be a conflict there (see Branden's reply
to me here about that earlier today). If you're paying dues to
more than one Lodge, that's a definate "no-no" according to the
GOA, because you're only supposed to be registered and paying dues
in the Lodge in which you hold your BSA registration; in other
words, OA membership is dependent upon BSA registration and the
Lodge and Council should "match up". For instance, I have paid dues
to Black Eagle Lodge for two years (my card doesn't expire until
June of 2000). However, I shouldn't wear the BEL flaps unless I'm
actually a part of the Transatlantic Council.

>My goodness, I wear BSA cargo pants (the old ones) and the newer
>side pocketless ones. And I have 5 shirts with position patches
>on each one (Dist Com, Council Exec Board, and 3 ASM's). I wear
>whatever is clean.

Same here; I wear whatever's clean (and appropriate for where I'm
going and what I'm going to be doing once there).

>And I wear the fruit loop that matches the position patch. This
>later is my principal defiance. And that because I think it silly
>to wear a red fruit loop to a council meeting where I am acting as
>Exec. Board member.

Why not? If you're primarily registered as Assistant
Scoutmaster... it doesn't matter anyway, because you've got that
Council Executive Board or District Commissioner's patch on your
sleeve (whichever shirt you're wearing)!

Settummanque!
