Re: New Handbook

Hi Don and all,

I bought my copy of the new handbook yesterday at the NCAC scout shop in
Bethesda, MD. While it is in many ways an improvement over the old one
(much better organized for one thing) I am disapointed that the drawings
of the tree leaves are no longer in the book, having been relegated to
the "field guide" (by which I guess they mean the Scout Field Book).

I have used the drawings extensively to teach the requirement for plant
identification, and have found them to be quite accurate and useful. I
do regret these drawings having been dropp[ed.

That's the only complaint I have--so far (although I think keeping the
Baden-Powell patrol designation is a neat way to keep our heritage in the
minds of our scouts, and do wish they'd kept that too).

Still, something's got to go when you revise, I guess. I'd give the new
handbook a solid B+ or an A-.

YiS,
