AOL requirements and den attendance

Kris and others: I had this come up this fall, so would benefit from the
discussion of this. We merged two dens this fall - WEbelos II dens.
There were only 3 boys left active in the one den. I had 7 remaining plus
picked up two new boys at Back to School Night. One of the three boys has
a parent who is active at the District level. The boy had completed all
the AOL requirements and all 20 Activity Pins and she had stated he had
completed all requirements for AOL. THis included active in the den. I
"questioned" this and asked that he come to the remaining couple of den
meetings which I felt would fulfil the requirement to be active in the
den. The den existed but was not a particularly active den. They did
however attend summer camp with my den and this boy attended. I also,
last minute invited him along to Rendevous and he attended. I did check
with the Scout Office (where his mother also works) and they considered
him as have completed his requirement as a Lone Scout. I researched this
in Cub Leader Basic Book and there is not an application process for Lone
Scout so based on this, I decided to let it go and not challenge this.
This parent has been pretty obnoxious on advancement issue in the past. I
did make an appointment with the Scout during his recess time at school
(so there was someone around and since he wouldn't come to a meeting) to
fulfill the need to have a meeting with the den leader. I waived viewing
the application, but discussed it. His mother initially felt I was "not
trusting" her - I mainly satisfied myself that he qualified for AOL and
hopefully satisfied the other Committee members that this boy earned this
and wasn't just "signed off" by his mother.
I hope this helps as I suspect you will run into the same problems. Make
sure that you are satisfied and it will appear to others that the Scout
completed the requirements for the sake of the Scout, and not the parent.
I've decided there isn't much hope for these parents who focus only on the
advancement "rewards" of the program.
