I've used the oil in Dutch oven method a la stovetop in my apartment and
would add two helpful hints. Put one or two kernels of popcorn in the oil.
When it or they pop, the oil is ready. Also, you may not want it over the
hottest part of the coals. Vegetable oil smoke is quite unpleasant, as
discovered through empirical observation... :)
