Re: 10 plants

we routinely set out orienteering courses on many of our campouts and use them
to accomplish rank advancement, reinforce scouting principles, and generally
have fun.

on a typical course they will shoot bearings to a starting target where they
will receive directions to their next target. at each point they may be
instructed to collect a plant specimen; identify tracks, bones, or scat;
measure a tree or other feature; have a reflection on a part of the scout
law/oath/motto; or just observe something neat we found when laying out the
course.

we may lay out as many as two courses (this is my excuse to go wandering
around alone in the woods) and will send them out in groups no larger than
four, preferably in pairs, and stagger them. i'll usually make the course
fairly easy at the start and harder toward the end with more cryptic clues. i
also like to leave them a treat along the way such as a bag of candy or some
sodas (a real treat since we ban sodas on campouts), particularly on the more
difficult targets.

with this we can cover map and compass, plants, animals and sometimes first
aid!
this spring we want to make one that will include first aid practice and
pioneering.
