That's not all together accurate. Male Explorers can continue to
wear rank *although they cannot earn Boy Scout rank* past 18.
Remember, they are *still considered youth members*.
Here's what the "four pounder" (I found it this evening....as soon
as I got home from work, I had to find the answer for someone who
left me voice mail) has to say about it:

Page 5: "Badges of Rank Are For Boys
In Scouting, THE ADVANCEMENT PROGRAM IS INTENDED FOR BOYS ONLY (in
bold type, which denotes official BSA policy). Scouters should
neither seek awards designed for boys nor wear them on the Scouter
uniform except for square knots representing the Arrow of Light
Award (Cub Scouting), Eagle Scout Award (Boy/Varsity Scouting),
Explorer Achievement Award (Exploring), Quartermaster Award (Sea
Scouting/Exploring) or religious emblems earned as a youth member."
The BSA's Rules and Regulations STILL have Explorers as youth
members (and if we want to move this a wee bit further, Venturers
are youth members until they turn 21. However, Scott Smith (who's
on the BSA's National Venturing Committee) already posted that
Venturers shouldn't be wearing the Boy Scout rank (because they
will have their OWN rank to wear on the pocket, I'm sure!)
So, even though *I* wouldn't recommend it, those 18, 19 and 20 year
old Explorers/Venturers *can "legally" wear the emblems on their
pockets...but buddy, when they turn 21, Eagle Scout Badge
"Awareness" or not (the argument over on Arrow-L is that many
Scouts know the Eagle Scout cloth badge over the red, white and
blue square knot...that's hogwash; it takes the same education to
Scouts about the knot as it does the cloth badge...even with the
words "Eagle Scout" on it!!), they'd better be taking them off
(Okay, Hugh Sullivan..I know, I know...they'll pry off your Eagle
Scout Badge off your shirt once you're cold and and in the
ground!!)!!

Thanks for finding it for me, Paul!! It's on section 22 of the

Yes, the two-fingered handshake for CUB SCOUTS (and Scouters
supposely!) is shown in the Cub Scout Leader Book (and since my
Wolf and Bear books are STILL in a box around here...., I would
only guess that they still carry the same illustration I learned
from as a Cub Scout ages ago (when I had more hair and a lot more
brain cells to use up!!)
