I think the idea is to teach Scouts how to cope with the planning and
preparation of a day's worth of meals. So, that means that one Scout at
a time cooks on a campout since we go home on Sunday after lunch. To
maximize the return on our once-a-month camping trips, I have Scouts
lined up in advance for this requirement. That means they've done
everything they can without actually buying the food and preparing it.
Now, when I have more boys in the new Scout patrol than we can
accommodate with our patrol's opportunities, I let the senior Troop
Guide know that he needs to ask both of the "main body" Patrol Leaders
if their patrol will let one of the new guys be Grubmaster and Cook for
them. We've never had any of the older boy patrols turn us down. This
way we can get three new Scouts through this tough requirement each
camping trip.
I suppose that if I was really hurting for opportunities that I would
arrange for a new Scout to cook for the adults, too. Doesn't scare
me.... ;-)
