Reguarding making a profit on activities...let me off an observation or
two. I run our councils winter camp, which is a weekend long merit badge
activity. We usually serve between 175 and 250 boys, with adults and
staff bringing the total up to about 400. This activity usually makes a
"profit" of about $1000. But this isnt really profit, and what we do
might be happening in your area. We also offer several activities in the
year that can in no way generate enough revenue to cover the costs of the
program. For example, our councils JLT cost the biys $95 for the week
long residence program. This fee included meals, t-shirt, hat, training
materials, supplies, etc, The program is a fantastic one here, and the
director spent well over $150 per participant, I think the number of boys
was 24. So you see, right here is an example of a net loss on fees, that
were offset by the "profit" from winter camp. We have other programs
that "profit" and others that lose. The big, popular, well attendend
programs subsidise the just -as ( or MORE) important programs we offer
our youth.
I cant comment on the 17.5% fee....maybe thats what it takes to even
things out at your council over the year. I do think that there is
nothing wrong with making a small "profit" per participant to cover other
costs in providing program throughout the year.
I would advise you to see if you can find out if the entire amount of
money generated by this 17% is spent in the course of a year. If it all
goes as subsidy...its probablly the right amount to charge...if they put
some of it in the general fund, its probablly too much.
Just my thoughts
