"Liberty Troop" designation

Michael Willis Freeland (freelanm@EROLS.COM)

I am the new Commander of Merion Post 545, American Legion. We
are the chartering organization for Merion Liberty Troop 71,
originally chartered on 10 October 1910 (called the "10-10-10"
Troop), and then re-chartered on 17 June 1916 when the BSA
received its federal charter. During WWI, the Troop received
designation as a "Liberty Troop" in recognition of its support
for the war effort by selling Liberty Bonds.

As part of our preparation for the Merion Liberty Troop's 90th
Anniversary celebration, we are trying to put together a detailed
history of the Troop. So far, we have not been able to find out
very much about the history of the Liberty Troop designation.

We believe that Merion Liberty Troop 71 is the oldest (and
perhaps the only) "Liberty Troop" still in existence. Is anyone
on this list aware of other Liberty Troops that are still
active? We don't want to make a false claim about our status.
