Someone asked if you must have a physical (Class I) on boys when your
troop has aquatic activities. Point 2 of Safe Swim Defense is "Evidence
of Fitness." The following is cut and pasted from the Guid to Safe
Scouting posted at http://www.usscouts.org/gold/g2ss.html :
"Require evidence of fitness for swimming activity with a
complete health history from
physician, parent, or legal guardian. The adult supervisor
should adjust all supervision,
discipline, and protection to anticipate any potential
risks associated with individual health
conditions. In the event of any significant health
conditions, the unit leader should require
proof of an examination by a physician. Those with
physical handicaps can enjoy and benefit
from aquatics if the handicaps are known and necessary
precautions are taken."
We usually make sure new Scouts get the physical summary on the back of
the application filled out and file it. I also keep camp physicals on
file. We often do not have the actual forms at aquatic activities, but
I am familiar with them or make sure someone has a summary for all boys.
