That is why you should allways pack all your belongings that are not useful
when wet in plastic. This includes clothing, sleeping bag, ground pad,
food, first aid kit, etc...
The most important thing to rember about water is that it should be easliy
got to. If this means inside the pack, then that's where you should put
it. Another reason for packing in plastic is so that the fuel bottle, when
spilled, doesen't get all over your stuff. A third reason is weather. We
don't allways have control over the weather. It could rain at any time,
and get all your stuff soaked. Remember that there is no such thing as a
weather proof pack. They may repel rain for a few minutes, even an hour,
but water will eventually get in. Allways pack in plastic, and use a pack
cover/poncho when you are hiking in rain. When you take the pack off at
your stop, leave it outside the tent, covered and preferably off the ground
so that water won't get into it.
