Different folks do Cub Scouting in different manners. I remember one
summer long ago when I earned the Lion Badge, two arrow points, and the
Arrow of Light, because it was the only way/time I could get them. BSA
had just lowered the joinging ages for all programs by one year and I
had just turned 11. If I waited for the fall I would have been too old
for cub scouting, and I was determined to make a clean sweep of it
before I left.
Did I meet the requirements? Yes. Was it the right thing to do? I
don't know, but I did everything within the time frame of the program in
which I had entered, then cut Cubbing short and went into Boy Scouts.
Earned Second Class by February of the next year too. Did I slde by on
any requirements? Not a chance! My dad was the District Commissioner
and everyone who passed me on a requirement took pains to insure if the
book said, "...do four...", I did at least four and a half to insure
that no favoritism was shown, or seen to have been shown.
He was too old to have participated in Scouting as a boy, but he
insured that later youth had a good opportunity to join scouts. Our
town of about ten thousand had two packs, two troops, and one post, with
many of the town's movers and shakers participating in the program.
