Being Active

I Have a question and would like the opinion of some other scouters.
Our troop just had elections last weekand a young man was elected SPL
who had been trying for a while. Here is the problem, this young man also
plays football at the local JHS.this year he made the varsity squad.
We are all very proud of him!! BUT there ball games are on the same
night as our troop mtngs. The requirements for life (he is Star rank)
are that he be active for six months and serve in a position of
leadership for four months(I think thats the right amount of time don't
quote me) With him being involved with football for ten weeks he will
miss most of his time as SPL and will not be back to a function until
after.I would like to know if there are any rules in BSA policy that
would help me out or that define active. And is there any one that can
give me some advice on what to do or what there troop does in these
types of situations

thank you

Y.I.S.
