Backpack Check List 1 of 3 Backpack responses (long)

This was a checklist I developed for a 7 day 6 night Colorado High
Adventure Backpack trip

Total Weight with full water, food and community gear should not exceed o=
ne
third of your body weight or 40-45 pounds which ever is less.

Days 65-75 degrees, nights 30-40 degrees, rain or sleet drops temperature
to about 50-55 degrees. Need to layer.

Mainly shorts and t-shirts during day hiking. T-shirt, long underwear,
flannel shirt and rain gear is sufficient to warm up at night and early
morning.

Water is very clear and very plentiful. However, the water absolutely mus=
t
be treated!

If you are over weight cut back on clothing and trail mix weight

Tents (complete poles, rain fly , tent, backpacking stakes, bananas)
Tarps ( or Mylar film)

Collapsible Water Bucket
Repair kit- stove
Repair kit =96 Backpack (pins, metal rings)
Extra backpack belt clasp
Extra backpack straps
Medical Kit
Ace Bandage (2)
Duct Tape roll on pencil
Topo maps of area 4, 7 =BD minute
Latrine shovel
Pot scrubber (green scrubby)






Individual:


Clothing: (avoid cotton clothing where possible)

Rain pants/ Rain Jacket and Pack Cover or Pack Poncho (extremely
important) If you need to buy a Pack Poncho buy a good one around $30 or
so; you need to stay dry.

Long Underwear (1 pair) polypropylene is best
Pendleton shirt or flannel shirt
T-shirt (2) polypropylene or wicking if possible save one for train ride
back
Extra Underwear (1 maybe 2)
Socks (2 extra)
Sock liners (1 extra) or (2) pair smart wool $14.95 backwoods

Shorts or convertible pants
sweat pants ( if no convertible pants or rain pants; one pair of long leg
covering will keep you warm)

Bandannas (2) use as wash cloth sweat band, shoulder handles, keep sun
off the back of the neck.

Hat (baseball minimum, full brim is better)) block sun

Boots
Sleeping bag
Therma-rest or Z-rest mattress or if you are young and tough nothing!
Pillow
Waterproof stuff sack or compactor trash bag (for sleeping bag; need to
keep dry)

Ocean Shoes or lightweight camp shoes (suggest a lightweight grocery
plastic bag to keep other items dry is shoes are wet

Toothbrush, tooth paste
Spoon
Cup

Personal Medicine =96 each scout responsible for their own medicine; adul=
ts
can remind

ibuprofen (Muscle soreness)
Ben Gay (muscle soreness)
Tums (altitude sickness)
moleskin
sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
lip chapstick (SPF 8 or higher)
insect repellent
campsuds (biodegradable soap)
matches (in a water proof container)
wash-n-wipes or no water cleaner
Potable water tablets (2 stage iodine removal best) 1 bottle 50 tablets
Safety pins =96 pin clothes to backpack to dry

Toilet paper (1/2 roll)

Water bottle (2, one quart size) or hydration system and one water bott=
le

Flash Light
firesticks (two)
Nylon parachute cord (50 feet)
Map
Compass
Knife
Whistle (although hard to hear above water roar)
Sunglasses neck straps

zip lock bags (large 2 gallon and 1 gallon size) DRYNESS IS GOOD!
trash sack (trash compactor)

Bear bar for hanging food at night (probably no bears, but plenty of
Marmots and ground squirrels)

Compactor trash bag for carrying out trash : LNT (Leave No trace)



Meals:

7 breakfasts
8 lunches
7 dinners

Trail Mix (2-4 pounds) and/or cliff bars and/or granola bars
and/or power bars (Yuck!)

Hard Candy (Jolly Ranchers make the climbs easier)
Beef Jerky (1 pound) try Ray Kuklenski is making
Nutrasweet Coolaide



Optional:

Camera : Disposable panoramic or camera and up to 7 rolls of film.
Hat (stocking) Warmth at night
Gloves clothe (if you hands get cold)
Extra backpack strap (48 inch) to hang up backpack easily around a tree =
at
night.
Binoculars

Space Blanket
Camp Stool or Crazy Creek Chair
Hiking Stick
Day Pack ( for mountain climbing only one or two people need this))
Shaver (Just Kidding ? )
