Back from Camp

The mountains just North of Red River, New Mexico were great
yet again this year. My Troop, BSA Troop 80, spent a week at
wilderness camp with about 42 scouts and 8 adult leaders. 22
other scouts and leaders took a little hike up one of Colorado's
14,000 foot peaks and rejoined the rest of us on Wednesday
evening.
We set up all the usual events that one would find at a regular
camp. We had archery, shooting, rope making, and carving areas
as well as a central kitchen. The boys, mostly first year campers,
seemed to have a great time. The week was topped off by a jaunt
down South to Albequerque and the Air Force base there. We hit
the REI store pretty heavy and Old Town and then it was off to the
local "All you can eat" Furr's for our last feast. WOW!!! The 70
of us sure put a dent in their food budget for the day, but they
were pretty nice to us.
The weather was good except for one day when it hailed and
rained all day. We out did ourselves in the kitchen area again
with some really good meals. We will need to refine the meals for
next year with the items that did and did not work. Fajitas instead
of enchalatas was a big success. The "Gourmet" ravioli did not
fair so well, nor did the chicken salad sandwiches.
The French toast always goes better when you add some
"Eagle Brand" milk and the deviled eggs were gobbled up as a
side dressing to steak night.
It is good to be back to the list and I will be glad to e-mail our
meals menu to anybody that wants it.
