"Spirit of the Eagle Award" - WE SHALL REMEMBER THEM

We Shall Remember Them.

>From time to time, a black cloud crosses the face of Scouting, as one of
our number is taken from us. WE SHALL REMEMBER THEM.

When leaders pass, we remember the lessons they taught us and the fun we
had. They left their mark. WE SHALL REMEMBER THEM>

But when one of our Scouts is lost, the pain is deeper. They have
touched us, but not had the chance to leave much of a mark on the
world. They leave us with a hole in our hearts and homes. There is a
gap in the den or the patrol. WE SHALL REMEMBER THEM.

For those who have felt this pain, know that our prayers are with you.
I send this note to also remind you of the new "Spirit of the Eagle
Award."

The Spirit award is a new one from BSA. It is an honorary postumous
recognition for a registered youth member who has lost his or her life
in a tragic accident or through illness. The award is bestowed by the
National Court of Honor as pert of the celebration of the life of this
young person. The award recognizes the joy, happiness, and
life-fulfilling experiences that the Scouting program made in this
person's life. To obtain this honor for a fallen Scout, they must
have been a youth member under 21 at the time of death, they must have
the unit committee submit an application for the award within six months
of the youth member's death, and the unit committee must request the
approval of the local council.

The address to mail the application to is:

National Court of Honor
c/o BSA
1325 West Walnut Hill Lane
PO Box 152079
Irving, TX 75015-2079

WE SHALL REMEMBER THEM.
