Prospeak has something like this. Every month they have an interview with
one or more field-serving professionals on how they approach their district
and various aspects of their job. It wouldn't be a bad idea to transfer
some of this info to Scouting.
Of course, you might get, "Why isn't MY DE like that?" Come to think of it,
that might just be the best thing that National could do to give their pros
a kick in the butt. Making promises to your boss is one thing: you can
always try to work your way around it one-on-one later. Making promises in
public is a lot harder, as standards are set that everyone can judge you by.
But there really needs to be better communication between the pros and the
volunteers on what the professional's role is and how they're supposed to be
doing their job. The brief intro you get in training just isn't enough.
This would be one way of doing it, of stripping away the curtain of mystery
that exists in too many Council offices, whether or not it was deliberately
set up or (in most cases) not. You will have a better team if everyone on
the team knows what the other person's role is. The pros know what the
volunteers are supposed to do, but the volunteers often don't know what the
pros' roles are.
My dad always told me (back when I was a youth on staff at Owassippe) to
treat volunteers like gold, even if they were full of it (not gold....).
Sounds like Baute knows it's true.
