Re: Adults Overnight at Council Camps

I forwarded Howard's post to my Council Service Center to seek
clarification (they had never said anything to us about only registered
leaders could remain overnight at our Council Camps). Their reply
follows (I have deleted the last part of it because it deals with
another, unrelated, issue).

Per the national policy on having to be registered-it is pure fiction.
All
boys have to be registered. All leaders serving in volunteer positions
that
have titles-Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, Cubmaster, etc-must be
registered. All parents going as an extra leader or just going with
their
boys-don't have to be registered. It could easily have been a bad
wording of
the above policy. For example, all adults have to be registered to stay
overnight in camp versus the more correct: all adults that are the
leaders
with titles must be registered to stay overnight in camp. In fact, the
second
part may not be correct as long as you have the stated minimums in terms
of
registered leaders (there may be a local council policy involved here,
too but
this is highly doubtable). You are always better off to be registered
as a
leader than to be just a parent. However, not every parent may qualify
as a
adult leader under a unit committee's rules. Probably more than you
wanted to
know. As to the rest of the questions-it's a moot point and exactly why
the
rules have not been changed and most likely will not change in the
future. I
certainly believe that any parent that gets involved in Scouting should
register simply for the fact that it is a very inexpensive way to get
information, have the priviledge of being a leader, being an insider
rather
than outsider, definite insurance coverage for themselves, and provides
the
unit with the maximum amount of flexibility when it comes to operating
programs which requires enough registered leaders to attend
camp-however, this
is personal opinion and not a stated policy-only a wish, dream, and a
mission.
Lastly, I certainly would have called the office first in terms of the
individual that posted that item (however, he may have done so) and
asked for
clarification because it is almost impossible to catch every error in
communications that goes through any Service Center. In fact, just like
you
did with your e-mail. ...
