Re: Adult Leaders without boys

I know Jeff said he didn't want to start a thread, but ... ;)

My father rejoined Scouting in 1971 after a LONG absence when I became a
Cub Scout (he originally left as a Star because he went to work). He
followed me through the entire program, including serving a lengthy
stint as Scoutmaster. When I left my old troop in 1983 to help Mr. Mako
with another one, my dad stayed on. I lost count of the number of
"generations" of boys who passed through that troop learning whatever
"Uncle Bob" could teach them.

When my dad died of cancer last summer, the entire troop showed up to
the evening viewing in uniform. The "adult patrol" and senior boy
leadership provided an honor guard there and at the funeral and the SPL
presented a troop neckerchief. During that whole grim time, my father's
memory received no greater honor.

The point is, Jeff, far from being viewed as a curiosity, you will be
the "elder statesman," and when your time comes, I suspect "Uncle Jeff"
will receive an equivalent honor. Don't cheat the boys of what you have
to offer.

YIS,

Bob Morehead
ASM, Troop 381

BTW, I have two daughters, but no sons.
