Adult Leaders without boys

I have read with much interest the various discussions about adult
leaders. There were several references to "he has no sons in the unit."
I have heard this phrase many times in the years I have been in
Scouting. I know that it is unusual to find a person interested in
giving of their time for Scouting without a boy in the program.
However, I am concerned that those individuals are seen with suspicion
or as a curiosity. My son will soon move from home and will no longer
be able to participate in the Troop. As an Eagle Scout, I have always
felt a debt of gratitude toward my Scoutmaster and Scouting in general.
I feel the repayment of that debt is being worked off by my sharing my
knowledge and skills with others on the trail to Eagle. Another reason
I participate in Scouting is more selfish. I enjoy teaching, counseling
and working with the Scouts. (Yes, what hair I have left is gray. :-) )
Isn't that the real reason we do what we do? Working with the boys
keeps me "physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight." I
wonder though, how I will be viewed when my son is no longer able to
actively participate in the Troop. I am not wanting to start a thread.
I'm not really looking for a response. It's just an observation I
thought should be shared.
YIS,
Jeff Brannen
